Henry Lawson Centenary event at Inverloch Library

Come to Inverloch Library on Wednesday 19 October at 2.30pm and meet Agi Dobson from the Henry Lawson Society.

“If a man’s in a hole you must pass round the hat / Were he gaol-bird or gentleman once”. These words by Henry Lawson prick our conscience as truly today as when he penned Send Round the Hat, over one hundred years ago.

2022 commemorates a century since the death of Henry Lawson, (1867-1922); the first Australian writer to receive a state funeral.

Lawson’s stories and poems are derived from experiencing the harshness of the outback, the rawness of prison life, the loneliness of alcoholism and near deafness, the poverty and isolation in big cities.

His work is among the first accurate, non-romanticised, descriptions of Australian life and the bond of mateship. He felt deeply for those who were hard done by and was known as “the people’s poet”.

Come and celebrate his life and writing.
