At Myli – My Community Library, we’re proud to collaborate with dedicated volunteers, especially our Friends of the Library groups, who help us create inclusive and welcoming spaces.
One example is the Friends of the Mirboo North Library (FOMNL), who recently contributed to an exciting new cinema setup. They provided silent disco headsets, a sensory-friendly rug, and blackout curtains—transforming the library into an accessible, cinema-like environment for film screenings. The headsets, originally used for silent discos during Youth Fest, now enable patrons to enjoy movies at their preferred volume without disturbing others. The blackout curtains improve screen visibility during daytime showings, and the sensory-friendly rug adds comfort for those who benefit from sensory accommodations.
FOMNL are currently volunteering at the Mirboo North Op Shop, where they typically raise an impressive $2,500 to $3,000 over two weeks to support library programs and events, including author talks and special activities. While working in the Op Shop, these dedicated volunteers also promote our libraries, engaging the community with flyers, posters, and conversations about the services we offer.
Through initiatives like this, we’re reminded that libraries are more than places to borrow books—they’re vibrant community hubs that reflect the needs and aspirations of everyone who visits. Thanks to the incredible support from our Friends groups, we continue to enhance our services and create inclusive spaces for all.
