Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid

Mind health challenges, disorders and diagnosis contribute to one of the top causes of disability within Australia, with an estimated 65,000+ attempts at suicide a year reported. Suicide and mental illness is the biggest killer in Australia of people ages 15-44.
West Gippsland Library Corporation is committed to building health communities through connection and learning and one way we can help our communities in Gippsland is to collaborate with people like Matt and his team at Mindfull Aus to bring awareness and tools to those needing it.

“Our organisation is very focussed on mental health and wellbeing for its staff and we want to share our resources and commitment to building healthy communities by providing Mindfull Aus the platform to deliver this important training to our communities,” says Linda Fowler-Manager People and Culture, West Gippsland Libraries.

Mindfull Aus has a purpose to bring hope and acceptance to those effected by Mental Illness and Suicide. Matt Runnalls, CEO and founder of Mindfull Aus is passionate about helping, passionate about collaborating and passionate about making a difference.

Mindfull Aus is grateful for the collaboration with The Andrews Foundation for being able to subsidise this training to community members within Gippsland from $500 training, down to just $25 for the Mental Health First Aid course, making access for community much more affordable.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

In January to March 2020, training courses were hosted by West Gippsland Libraries in Baw Baw Shire, Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire. There are now many mental health foot soldiers in Gippsland to help support those who are struggling with mind and behavioural health challenges.

The training has now moved to an online format, which consists of 2×2.5 hour zoom sessions and is still available to any Gippsland residents for only $25. Please visit the Mindful Aus website for more details and for bookings: https://www.mindfullaus.org/shop/Gippsland

West Gippsland Libraries look forward to continuing to support this great initiative.
