The Poowong Library Community Garden has officially opened, transforming the outdoor space beside the library into a welcoming area for connection, learning, and sustainable gardening.
The project was initiated to create a shared space that encourages community connection, environmental education, and sustainable gardening practices. Funding was provided through the Children’s Week Grant from the Victorian Department of Education and a donation from the Poowong Swim Club, which generously contributed funds remaining after the club’s closure.
Developed in partnership with Poowong Consolidated School, Poowong Pre-School, South Gippsland Shire, and many local volunteers, the garden represents the strength of local collaboration and celebrates children’s voices in community projects. Children were actively involved in the planning and design process, championing children’s agency and creativity.
The garden’s official launch was held on October 23rd as part of a Children’s Week event celebrating the theme “Everyone should know about Children’s Rights.”
Families, students, and community members joined in planting activities, food-themed crafts, and Storytime, enjoying a hands-on experience that highlighted the importance of children’s participation and community togetherness. This beautiful new garden will continue to grow as a community asset and a place for connection, learning, and sustainability for years to come.
