School Holidays – Winter 2022

Escape the winter chill and enjoy the school holiday fun at your local library! We have a vast range of events at our branches, so there really is something for everyone. Let’s take a look at some of the events  –

Baw Baw Shire –

Drouin Library: The super popular ‘Introduction to Aerosol Art’ is back on Monday 27th June! We’ve partnered with State of the Art Murals, and you can learn how to create your own work of art to take home. This event is for children aged 12+ only.

On Thursday 30th June, we’re running two sessions of Salt Painting. This is a messy activity, so wear old clothes or bring an art smock. We’ll clean up the salt!

We’re hosting two movie screenings in the library on Tuesday 28th June and 5th July. We will show a different movie each week, and we’ll provide snacks. Call the library on 56 251 564 to find out what is showing.

On Thursday 7th July, come along to build your own Winter Wonderland Diorama. All materials will be supplied. 

Warragul Library: We’re showing a family movie session in the library to kick off the school holidays on Friday 24th June. Call the library on 56 222 848 to find out what’s showing.

Get ready to sing and dance because Damo Music for Kids is back! Hooray! Damo is a Melbourne singer and songwriter, and he’ll be hosting a special StoryTime on Tuesday 28th June. Tickets are booking up fast for this event so register now to avoid missing out.

We’ll be creating Winter Wonderland Snowflakes on Thursday 30th June. Glitter foam and silver paper are used to make marvellous decorations. This craft is suitable for children aged 12+ as we will be using hot glue guns; however younger children will be provided with a simpler activity.

The team from Industry Studio will be joining us on Monday 4th July for two Introduction to Hip Hop and Jazz workshops. These events are best suited to participants aged 7-12. 

On Tuesday 5th July, come along and learn how to create a little plant hanger using basic macrame techniques. This activity is suitable for children aged 8+. 

Neerim South Library: Builders and crafters unite! On Saturday 2nd July, we’ll be building (and testing!) a giant marble run out of cardboard, plastic and metal. Come along, build and compete for fun!

Bass Coast Shire –

San Remo Library: The popular ‘SpheroBot‘ robots will be visiting the library on Monday 27th June. In an interactive robot coding workshop, learn how to code the sphero to run a maze. On Thursday 30th June, come along to make some Marvellous Mini Beast creations using air-dry clay.

We’ll be joining in the festivities for the Phillip Island Whale Festival on Saturday 2nd July with a fun craft activity. On Wednesday 6th July, explore the diversity of Life in the Rockpool and make your own diorama. This event is best suited to upper primary-aged children.

Come along for a Planking Good Time on Thursday 7th July. Planks are fabulous and dynamic building blocks, designed to inspire creative minds. Fun for builders of all ages. 

Phillip Island (St John’s Uniting Church): Andrew Plant will showcase his beautiful new book Stardiving, which deals with self-acceptance, resilience and self-esteem. Andrew will run an illustration workshop on Tuesday 28th June suitable for primary school-aged children.

Join our librarians for Whale Festival-themed stories and craft on Friday 1st July. 

Dragon lovers will enjoy our Dragon Egg Conjuration session on Tuesday 5th July! Delve into dragon lore, exercise your imagination and make your very own dragon egg. What beast of yore will hatch from yours?! 

Please note that the Phillip Island events location is St John’s Uniting Church, located on Chapel St, Cowes. 

Inverloch Library: PLANKS are fun for all ages! Come along on Tuesday 28th June for fun, open-ended, imaginative play. Work together to build a tower, or create your own masterpiece! The Friends of Inverloch Library group generously donated the planks for this event. 

Come and try out different crafts with paper at the Papercraft event on Thursday 30th June.  Make your own beads, wintery snowflakes, cute 3D animal or a fun collage. Suitable for all ages.

Damo Music for Kids will continue his Gippsland tour with a visit to Inverloch Library on Thursday 7th July for a special StoryTime session. He loves to sing, dance and read silly stories. 

Waterline Library: The Waterline Library team in Grantville will have a whale of a time at the Whale Festival craft session on Saturday 2nd July. 

Wonthaggi Library: Program of events to be announced soon. Bookings are open for Damo Music for Kids (Thursday 7th July).

South Gippsland Shire – 

Mirboo North Library: Old books make the perfect hiding spot for your treasures. Book into Creators Club on Thursday 30th June and learn how to make a Treasure Book. Suitable for students in grades 4,5 and 6. Our monthly Lego Club session will be on Thursday 5th July at 4pm. Build ’em up and stack ’em tall, Lego in the library is fun for all!

We are so excited for our Interactive Movie session on Wednesday 6th July. Jump, sing, dance and move as we watch a latest release family movie. There is a script to follow and it won’t be quiet! Here’s a hint for the movie that we’re showing – it starts with E and ends with O!

Foster Library: Join Tim, Myli’s resident gem and precious stone collector, for a hands-on session on Tuesday 28th June. The Wonderful World of Gems is always a popular event, so book early to avoid disappointment.

You all loved our T-shirt Design & Painting session so much that we’re bringing it back on Friday 8th July. You’ll need to bring your own t-shirt (plain coloured and freshly washed is best!), and we’ll provide the paints, stencils and guidance to help your creative flow.

We’ve partnered with Manna Gum Community House for some fun events. We’re running a NAIDOC Week Sand Art* event on Wednesday 6th July, and participants are welcome to stay for the Welcome to Country event and lunch* at 12pm.  Test your building skills at Lego Creation* session on Thursday 7th July, and get creative in collaborative groups.

*Please note that the Manna Gum events will be held at Manna Gum Community House. 

Poowong Library: Tim is heading back to the Poowong Library with his gems! The Wonderful World of Gems session will be held on Thursday 30th June at 2pm. 

Korumburra Library: Damo Music for Kids is visiting Korumburra Library for a special afternoon StoryTime session on Tuesday 28th June at 2pm. Children of all ages will love dancing, reading and singing with Damo!  

Leongatha Library: Join us for a NAIDOC Week StoryTime session on Thursday 7th July at 10.30am. We’ll be exploring literacy, language and culture through First Nations’music, stories and songs. Learn about musical instruments from the Torres Strait and create your own from recycled materials.
