Myli team member Rochelle shares her insights into our Drift Media film workshops which were held during the April 2023 school holidays.
For Meetup 2023, four South Gippsland branches of Korumburra, Leongatha, Foster and Mirboo North were lucky enough to host some fantastic film workshops led by the talented Mick Green of Drift Media. The title of these workshops was Something Wicked in South Gippsland Comes – a hint to this event’s spooky nature!
Participants aged from 10 – 25 (and a couple of adults who didn’t want to miss out of the fun!) congregated at their local branch to learn film techniques, collaborate, and either direct from behind the camera or were confident enough to step in front of the camera for some truly inspired acting!
Every branch had loads of fun, with each library being the setting of a rather supernatural event; be it ghosts, zombies, magic books or witchcraft! The participants got to make the finished production their own with film editing and some stellar ideas and creativity.
I was lucky enough to host two of these events, and it was truly inspiring how talented, enthusiastic and engaged all the participants were. I have a feeling that South Gippsland may play host to a few actors, directors and screenwriters in the coming years! Even the icebreaker challenge was fun, with participants drawing a caricature to symbolise their participation in the event, which was then sped right up and utilised in the credits section of the film.
Speaking of the film, after gathering so much amazing raw footage from the participants, Mick assembled a professionally edited film that will be showcased in a world-first premiere on Thursday the 27th of April at 4pm on our website, social media and on the big screen at our South Gippsland branches. Mick also packaged together some fun behind-the-scenes footage which shows the volume of work that went into creating this film.
The workshops have been incredibly successful for Myli, with every event booked to capacity. These workshops greatly encouraged youth in regional South Gippsland to come to their local library and gain some truly fantastic film knowledge and opportunities!
