The Librarians at Mardi Gras 2023!

The Librarians at Mardi Gras 2023!

Myli team members Mia and Rochelle attended Sydney World Pride in February and marched with the Libraries Change Lives banner in the 2023 Mardi Gras Parade. Corinna Pierce, Manager of Library and Learning Futures at the Waverley Library in NSW, organised the ‘Librarians’ entry and showed that libraries are for everyone – they are places where our voices are not shushed but amplified. ‘The Librarians’ float was sponsored by The Australian Library Information Association (ALIA).

Mia and Rochelle felt privileged to be able to represent Victorian public libraries on the world stage, and really enjoyed having the opportunity to connect with other queer library professionals across many parts of the industry. Despite only being in Sydney for one weekend, they also had the chance to attend a few other World Pride events and loved being able to support their community in this way.

Mia and Rochelle marched with 60 queer library people and allies from libraries around the country and felt so grateful to be included. They would like to thank everyone for their support, in particular Corinna Pierce who spent many hours of personal time organising such an outstanding entry into Mardi Gras. Mia and Rochelle would also like to thank ALIA and Public Libraries Victoria. ‘We can’t stop smiling! Our hearts are full!’

If you have any ideas for community events and collaborations that you would like to see in your local Myli library, Mia and Rochelle would love to hear from you! They welcome you to send your thoughts, ideas and comments via email to connect@myli.org.au
