Zoom Author Talk: Jackie Huggins AM In Conversation

November 8, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Overview
In conversation – and remembrance – with Dr Jackie Huggins AM.

Dr Jackie Huggins AM is in conversation with writer/interviewer, Claire Halliday.

Jack Huggins enjoyed a happy childhood in North Queensland, as part of a loving family that somehow escaped the harsh Queensland government treatment of First Nations’ peoples.

His father was in the army in World War I and when WWII changed the lives of so many Australians, Jack followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted. Jack was captured by the Japanese and spent much of the war as a prisoner on the notorious Burma-Thailand railway.

The narrative and personal reflections shared in Jack of Hearts – a book written by his daughter, respected academic, author, activist and historian, Dr Jackie Huggins AM – share insights into love, loss and the need to understand one man’s journey and how he was forever changed by war.

This moving, affectionate portrait tells a compelling account of courage in wartime and helps us all have a better understanding of the sacrifices made by our soldiers.

About the author:

Dr Jackie Huggins AM is a Bidjara and Birri-Gubba Juru woman and a leading Indigenous academic, author, and champion for reconciliation. Some of her other books include Sister Girl and Auntie Rita. Jack of Hearts was published in April, 2022.
