BIG Summer Read 2022/23

The BIG Summer Read (BSR) is a Victorian statewide summer reading campaign for children and young people. It is a collaborative Public Libraries Victoria initiative, developed to raise awareness and ensure ALL Victorian children have access to the resources they need to maintain literacy skills over the summer school holidays. Kids are encouraged to keep reading over the summer holidays with an incentivised program that uses Beanstack, a mobile app that rewards them for reading. When reading milestones are reached, kids earn ‘badges’ for their Beanstack profile and increase their chances of winning a prize.

The BIG Summer Read is open to anyone aged 0-18.

It aims to encourage children to read for pleasure and addresses the issue of the ‘summer slide’. This refers to the loss of literacy experienced over the long summer break if children are not exposed to books or reading. 

The program will open for pre-registration on 7 November 2022, and starts Thursday 1 December 2022. Pre-registration is where kids can create their account on Beanstack and sign up to the program. It ends on Tuesday 31 January 2023.

Account Registration – 

To participate in the challenge, users are required to register for an account through the Beanstack site. You can register as an individual or as a family. Children under the age of 13 will need their parent’s permission in order to register with Beanstack.  Parents can use the Family Account feature to track all of their children’s reading from a single login.

Registration Badge – 

Once the account is set up, participants will be prompted to join the BIG Summer Read challenge. Joining the challenge will unlock the registration badge.

Logging Badges – 

In order to complete the challenge, participants need to log 10 books. This can be done any time during the challenge until it closes on 31 January. 

Activity Badges – 

Participants may also choose to collect activity badges. While we encourage them to do this, they are not a requirement for completion – just a lot of fun! 

Beanstack is an application that incentivises reading and allows users to keep track of how many books/audiobooks have been read. A mobile app (also known as Beanstack Tracker) makes this easy with features including a barcode scanner and reading timer. Children must be over the age of 13 to register for an individual account. Parents can register their children and manage participating family members within their account

Statewide prize – 

Three winners will be drawn randomly from those participants who completed the challenge on Beanstack.  

0-8 years: $250 Readings gift voucher 

 9-12 years: $250 Readings gift voucher  

13-18 years: $500 Readings gift voucher 

Please note that only participants registered through Beanstack will be eligible for the statewide prize draw. All entries will be eligible for the local prize draw. 

Winners and their nominated Library Service will be notified via email. Terms and Conditions can be found at plv.org.au/bsr

Participants in the Big Summer Read must be under the age of 18, reside in Victoria and must be able to collect their prize from a specified library branch. Prizes will not be awarded to anyone who does not meet the eligibility criteria.

Myli – My Community Library BIG Summer Read Terms and Conditions for Participants

–  The Big Summer Read (BSR) starts on 1 December 2022 and finishes 31 January 2023.

–  No late entries will be accepted.

–  The draw is open to children aged between 0 and 18 years of age. Participants must be a Myli member and reside in Victoria.

–  You must be able to collect your prize from your local Myli library branch. Prizes cannot be posted.

–  Prizes will not be awarded to anyone who does not meet the eligibility criteria.

–  To be eligible for the local prize, each entrant must register on the Big Summer Read Beanstack Challenge and have logged 10 books, OR submit a paper tracker at their local Myli library branch.

–  Paper entries returned to the Library will be manually entered as Offline readers by Myli library staff and will only be eligible for the local prizes.

–  Reading and logging additional books will increase a participant’s chances of winning.

–  Parent/guardian verification of the Beanstack account for the participant indicates they give permission for entry and accept these Terms and Conditions.

–  Employees of Myli and their children are not eligible to enter.

–  Total prize pool to be announced. There will be four local prize categories.

– The random draw will be conducted by staff a staff member at the MYLI Support Centre. Winners will be contacted via phone and email in February 2022.

–  Prizes cannot be substituted for cash, transferred, or otherwise exchanged.

–  Once awarded, prizes become the property and responsibility of the respective winners.

–  The decision is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into.

–  Every effort will be made to notify participants they are prize winners; however, if a winner cannot be contacted within two weeks of the draw Myli reserves the right to re-draw winner(s).
