West Gippsland Libraries is excited to announce the next iteration of the highly successful Books By Us: School Publishing Collaboration project. Nansi Kunze, local professional author and passionate supporter of public libraries and literacy, is the creative mind behind this concept. Nansi’s books include the young adult novels; Dangerously Placed; Mishaps, and Kill the Music. The innovative Books By Us concept turns classrooms into publishing houses!
First delivered at Trafalgar Primary School in 2019, Nansi and Library team members are currently working hard to adapt the program to a remote online learning format. This time, we look forward to working with senior primary students and staff from Yarragon Primary School.
“We are grateful to receive some funding towards the program from Victoria Writers Centre and Grace Marion Wilson Trust.” Kathie Olden, Manager Volunteers and Community Participation.
Students experience the excitement of creating their very own books: planning and developing their idea, crafting, editing, re-drafting and meeting deadlines. These experiences demonstrate the importance of literacy skills and the lifelong benefits which these skills unlock. This version of the program is another good example of public libraries adapting very quickly in a Covid -19 environment!
The program brings primary school students, parents, teachers and librarians together for a fun and literacy-rich program. Students are introduced to all aspects of the publishing process, from initial creative writing and concept development, through to design and production of quality fiction and non-fiction books. Our young authors and their families and the school community enjoy a celebrity ‘red-carpet book launch’ at the end of the program, and their titles are added to West Gippsland Libraries collection.
